Music instructor, David Vandereyk recently returned from India where he was invited to adjudicate the Intermediate Piano Division of MusiQuest 2009 and also present a lecture on Healthy Approaches to Piano Technique based on his recent research.

David, who is currently on paid educational, considered MusiQuest to be an enriching cultural and professional experience through his interaction with students, teachers, parents and volunteers of the festival.

MusiQuest is a national level piano festival presented by The Academy of Music Pune and its director Roxana Anklesaria-Doctor.  It aims to foster education, performance and development in music to students throughout India.   The music festival is presented in a workshop/masterclass format providing amateur musicians of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to improve skills and receive constructive evaluation.

This year’s festival saw an unprecedented 153 participants and 38 teachers spanning the length and breadth of the country.  According to Anklesaria-Doctor, “It is my vision to provide our students with musical opportunity and visibility on the national scene.  As a music educator, I believe in nurturing students not only towards excellence in performance but to imbibe a love and discernment of the musical arts that will stay with them forever.  MusiQuest opens the doors for musical sharing and interaction.”

Conducting Certificate in Music

Capilano University now offers a Conducting Certificate in Music as of September 2007.

Graduates of this program will be qualified to conduct choral and instrumental ensembles effectively and confidently.

This 20-credit certificate is designed so that currently active teachers and musicians may take this program while continuing to work. Most classes are offered in the evening over an eight-month period and it is possible to take this program on a part-time basis.

Courses include conducting, conducting pedagogy, ensemble and languages:

  • The core conducting course works on fundamental conducting technique including conducting patterns, cues, cut-offs, phrasing, tempo changes, expressive gestures, use of the left hand, baton technique, choral and orchestral conducting.
  • Conducting pedagogy includes watching and discussing recorded performances, attending live performances, observing rehearsals, and discussion of various approaches to conducting.
  • All participants are required to sing in one of the University choirs where they will have hands-on experience in working with an ensemble.
  • All students take two semesters of Italian, German or French to enhance their choral conducting abilities.

Participants in this program will have opportunities to conduct the University ensembles in rehearsals. All practical exams will be taken by conducting the Capilano University Singers.
