Pre-Departure Week

The McRae Institute program offers professionals with diverse backgrounds the opportunity to advance their careers in international management through:

  • intensive academic training;
  • international work experience; and
  • access to an active international contact network.

Candidates for the program are selected from across Canada and around the world, bringing a range of diverse backgrounds to the classroom. The programs combine eight months of academic training in Vancouver with a one-year paid work term placement with various companies, non-profit organizations and government agencies throughout the Asia Pacific region, Latin America and Canada.

Class sizes are kept small during the academic year in Vancouver, ensuring a highly personalized approach to learning, including direct access and observation from faculty and program advisors. Minimum criteria to enter the programs are an undergraduate degree, fluency in English and an average of 3 to 5 years of work experience.

The McRae program offer rigorous and interactive learning environments where associates work in cross-sectoral teams on international and intercultural management projects, to develop strong planning, organizational and project management skills. Teamwork, particularly in a multicultural environment, is critical to the success of a student completing the nine-month study period. Coursework provides associates with an applied understanding of international management principles and practice. Languages and cross-cultural communication studies provide associates with intensive practical language training. Regional and country context studies provide associates with an in-depth historical, cultural, political and economic grounding which complements core management competencies.

During the workterm, associates apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes learned in the program to management practices in Asia, Latin America and Canada. In addition, annual professional development conferences are held in Asia and Latin America to keep associates, faculty and business partners on the leading edge of market and development issues.
