About Interactive Design
Design Your Future Today
Capilano University offers a flexible program for creative individuals with a strong desire to establish a career in interactive media. We believe an understanding of the medium is important to technique, so our curriculum is founded on conceptual fundamentals of communication and interactivity. Of course, you will need a focused and relevant set of skills for a competitive edge: the ability to deliver an interactive experience that meets the requirements of people and businesses. You will receive face-to-face instruction from industry insiders in a dedicated, up-to-date lab, using your own computer and software.
The first year of the Interactive Design program encompasses all of the skills necessary to plan, design and implement websites. In the second year, you will pursue advanced studies in one of three specializations: web design and development; disc-based interactive multimedia; and e-Learning. You will explore a variety of specialization topics, as well as database design and rich media content development. A six-week work practicum gives you the opportunity to gain real-world experience as well as valuable contacts with employers.
Career Opportunities
Upon completion of the program, graduates' skills and knowledge will prepare them for entry to careers in:
- web design and development
- information architecture and user experience design
- rich media authoring and production
- e-Learning and courseware development
Learning Environment
The Lab
The Interactive Design Lab is where nearly all of the instruction and practical work takes place. Each student can access their workstation 7 days a week. Students also have access to production computers and equipment for audio recording, editing and mixing; digital cameras to shoot, capture, edit and composite digital video and still images. To facilitate cross-platform development and testing, a usability testing suite is available to record screen and video footage of interactivity tests.
The Hub
The Hub is our online communication, conferencing and collaboration site. Students, staff, and faculty use the site for daily communications and for access to online course materials. Students receive course notes, submit assignments, hold discussions and plan course activities on The Hub. The Hub is a host for a number of user communities and departments. It enables us to collaborate and to communicate anywhere and everywhere. It is an integral part of the Interactive Design program.
