Finding Coral: Our Journey to the Bottom of the Sea

Date: November 19th, 2009
Time: 11:30-13:00
Place: Cedar Building, Room 148.

On June 8th, 2009 Jennifer Lash, Executive Director of the Living Oceans Society, led the Finding Coral Expedition on a journey to the bottom of the sea on Canada’s Pacific coast in search of deep sea corals. Piloting a one person submarine, Jennifer Lash-CoralJennifer dived to depths of over 500 meters and saw giant coral forests, darting schools of fish, and the seafloor carpeted in brittle sea stars. Now you can hear Jennifer’s stories and see pictures and videos of her adventure, and find out why it is crucial that we protect coral and deep sea ecosystems.

The Biology Department and Global Stewardship Program at Capilano University are co-sponsoring this public lecture. Jennifer's presentation contains a message about the importance of our oceans’ health to all Canadians, and the importance of protecting coral and the deep sea ecosystem. The presentation will be followed by a 20 minute question and answer period.

STEWS IN THE NEWS

Flash MobGlobal Stews staged a flash mob at MP Andrew Saxton's office to put pressure on the federal government to meet its responsibilities at the Copenhagen Conference on climate change. The pledge states that the signer will pass Bill C-311, the "Climate Change Accountability Act", which sets hard, science-based targets for emission reductions. The Flash Mob was organised through the Tck Tck Tck and KYOTOplus campaigns with the goal of having Mr. Saxton sign the KYOTOplus Politician's Pledge. Flash Mob was one of 2300 events taking place around the world designed to show our political leaders that we want action on climate change now.

The Global Stews For Guatemala students were honoured by the UN Association and the Unitarian Church with the John Gibbard Award, recognizing "young people working for humanity and a better world. " Pictured below are three of the Global Stewardship students who went to Guatemala to build a new preschool-- Felipe Simoes, Jessie Bemister, and Amanda Earle -- along with program convenor, Cam Sylvester, and Dr. Jennifer Wade from the United Nations Association.

The Global Stewardship Program is honoured to announce our new agreement with the Free The Children and Leaders Today programs. Marc Kielburger, Executive Director of the programs, was on campus on October 20, 2006 to give an inspiring talk about service, and to sign the agreement. From now on, students who complete a Free the Children or Leaders Today program after graduating from high school will receive credit for two courses (Global Stewardship 101 and 201) once they enter the Global Stewardship Program. This is similar to other agreements signed with Katimavik, CUSO, and Canada World Youth, and recongizes the tremendous amount of education that goes on in these service learning organizations.
