ESL Department Awards
The ESL department has four awards available to our students in particular.
The Nicholas J. Collins Award of $1,000 is awarded to two ESL students (one award is for a female and one award is for a male) every spring term. It is based upon high academic achievement in conjunction with other contributions, such as sports, volunteer work, or organizational work. In the fall term, ESL instructors invite all interested ESL students to apply.
The Janet Holland is awarded every year to one deserving ESL student. The award is in memory of Janet Holland, an ESL teacher and wife of Capilano University art instructor Kiff Holland. The family of Janet Holland has established a permanent fund in her memory to assist deserving students enrolled in the ESL department at Capilano University. The candidate is selected in November and the award is given every Spring term.
The Joan Acosta/Westcoast Reader Award is given each year to one student enrolled in Beginner to Upper Advanced level ESL courses in the ESL department at Capilano University. The student must be enrolled in Capilano University's ESL 03 to 05 level, be hard-working and motivated, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and not have received any other ESL department scholarship or bursary. The award is based on effort and progress in class. The candidate is selected in November and the award is given every Spring term.
The Sabrina Rentz Memorial Award is an award in memory of Sabrina Rentz, a receptionist in the ESL department for three years, who died at the young age of 25. This award is given each year to an ESL student who best reflects the spirit of Sabrina Rentz, a student who is enthusiastic and hard-working, and who willingly interacts with classmates in a positive and helpful way. The student must have maintained a high level of academic achievement, with a minimum average grade of 80%, including all ESL courses taken at Capilano University. The student must be enrolled in at least his/her second term of ESL courses and has an intention to continue studying at Capilano University. The student must have completed a minimum of six credits at Capilano University and is currently enrolled in a minimum of six credits (i.e. at least two regular courses).
