ESL Department Awards

For English as a Second Language (ESL) Students

The Financial Aid and Awards Office has five (5) awards available for ESL students in particular.

The Francis and Anne Farnan Memorial Award is awarded every spring to English as a Second Language (ESL) students enrolled at Capilano University. The award was established by former Capilano University faculty member F. John Farnan and wife Vilailuxa to honour the memory of parents Francis and Anne Farnan who, with their children, immigrated to Canada from England in 1948. The Francis and Anne Farnan Memorial Award recognizes deserving domestic (Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, protected and refugee status) and International students who enrol in the ESL program at Capilano University. This award specifically recognizes students' career goals in the fields of education, medicine, internationalism, social science, animal welfare and the arts.  As well as high academic achievement, the candidates' spirit of volunteerism within the community is also to be acknowledged among the criteria for award selection. The candidate is selected in November and the award is given in the spring term.

The Janet Holland Memorial Fund is awarded every year to one deserving ESL student. The award is in memory of Janet Holland, an ESL teacher and wife of Capilano University art instructor Kiff Holland. The family of Janet Holland has established a permanent fund in her memory to assist deserving ESL students. The candidate is selected in November and the award is given in the spring term.

The Joan Acosta/Westcoast Reader Award is given each year to one student studying ESL at Capilano University from CAC to Lower Advanced levels. The student must be hard-working and motivated, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and not have received any other ESL department scholarship or bursary. The award is based on effort and progress in class. The candidate is selected in November and the award is given in the spring term.

The Nicholas J. Collins Award is awarded to two English as a Second Language (ESL) students (one award is for a female student and one award is for a male student) every spring term. It is based on high academic achievement in conjunction with other contributions, such as sports, volunteer work or organizational work. In the fall term, ESL instructors invite all interested ESL students to apply. The candidate is selected in November and the award is given in the spring term.

The Sabrina Rentz Memorial Award was established in memory of Sabrina Rentz, a receptionist and Departmental Assistant in the English as a Second Language (ESL) department for three years who died at the young age of 25.  This award is given each year to an ESL student who is enthusiastic, hard-working and willingly interacts with classmates in a positive and helpful way, best reflecting the spirit of Sabrina Rentz. The student must have maintained a high level of academic achievement with a minimum average grade of 80% including all ESL courses taken at Capilano University in a particular term.  The candidate is selected in November. Every spring term, this award is given to an ESL student who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and who has not received any other ESL department scholarship or award.
