Success in university diploma, degree or post-graduate course work requires strong reading, writing, listening and speaking 
skills, as well as excellent presentation skills, research and citing competency. Together these skills help students to participate 
actively in class, work in teams and research, prepare and present excellent assignments. The English for Academic Purposes 
(EAP) department offers multiple EAP levels and a selection of pathway or combined skills program options that transition 
second language students to university with ease. 

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Levels

20 hours weekly These intermediate levels focus students on reading,

vocabulary, writing, grammar, listening and speaking.

EAP placement at these levels are based on

English Language Assessment (ELA) test score

of a minimum of 32 (EAP 050) and 57 (EAP 060)

or Capilano English for Academic Purposes

(EAP) Placement Test.

EAP 060

EAP 070 

20 hours weekly These advanced levels focus on building reading,

vocabulary, writing, grammar, listening and  

speaking skills.

IETS 4.5 no band under 4.0 or equivalent

EAP 080

IELTS 5.0 no band under 4.5 or equivalent

EAP 090 

16 hours weekly This is a transition level. Student can study EAP 090 as

an independent course or join one of the University's

combined programs.

IELTS 5.5 no band under 5.0 or equivalent

EAP 100 & 101 

8 hours weekly

These transition level courses are academic level 3

credit courses. Many programs will accept up to 3 EAP

credits as elective credits towards the degree/diploma.

Successful completion of EAP 090 with a grade

of B or better; or IELTS 6.0 no band under 5.5  

or equivalent

This program is also known as EAP + 2. Students

study EAP 100 + 101 plus up to 2 academic

courses from the Arts, Sciences or Business

programs.

5.5 (no band under 5.0) or equivalent.
Must meet non-English entrance requirements for Arts, Science or

Business Administration programs.

EAP 100 & EAP 101 Plus 
ENGL 100

StartsinSeptemberandJanuary

ENGL 100 sets the academic stage for student

success in University programs and should be

taken early in a study plan. However most second

language students fear or struggle to pass the

English Diagnostic Test causing them to delay

taking ENGL 100. This transition program

combines EAP 100 and 101 as a support course

for ENGL 100.

Successful completion (minimum grade of B) in EAP 090 or IELTS

(no band under 5.5) or equivalent.
Must also meet non-English entrance requirements for the University

program student plans to study in. Faculty may interview students

for suitability to this transition program.

Business Administration 
Pathway

StartsinSeptember

This is a two-semester bridge program. Students

who successfully complete all bridge course will

transition to their business administration

diploma or degree with 18 credits.

Successful completion (minimum grade of B) in EAP 080 or IELTS

5.5 (no band under 5.0) or equivalent.
Must meet non-English entrance requirements for Business

Administration.

Early Childhood Care  
and Education Pathway

StartsinSeptember

This is a two-semester bridge program. Students

who successfully complete all bridge courses will

transition to their Early Childhood Care and

Education (ECCE) diploma or degree with 12 credits.

Successful completion (minimum grade of B) in EAP 080 or IELTS

5.5 (no band under 5.0) or equivalent.
Must meet non-English entrance requirements for Early Childhood

Care and Education.
