Medea
February 2 – 7, 2010 @ 8 pm; February 6 & 7 @ 2 pm | $12/$10
By Euripides
Directed by Stephen Atkins
This classic tragedy is re-awakened and re-imagined in a vibrant and contemporary adaptation. Medea is a story of jealousy and revenge; of a woman who betrayed her father and people to aid Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece. Now, years later, Jason's eye has wandered to the daughter of Creon, ruler of Corinth. Medea is outcast as Jason's plan to marry comes to fruition. The play reveals the suffering of scorned love and the strife of conflict leading to a ghastly act of revenge. It is a story of universal appeal, revealing emotions in their purest and most troubling forms and unfolding a fate which is utterly destructive.

Footloose explodes onto the stage with classic ’80 s anthems including Holding Out for a Hero, Almost Paradise, Let’s Hear It for the Boy and, of course, the title track Footloose. Life in small-town Bomont is peaceful until city boy, Ren, arrives. Breaking every taboo, Ren brings dance back to the heart of a town held back by the memory of a tragedy. To the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people and guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

The thing about Tom is that he loves his wife, Lucy, even though he’s having a fling with his secretary. The thing about Lucy is that she’s fallen in love with Sebastian. Toss in some unlikely roommates and a gorilla mask, and this saucy musical-comedy tells an over-the-top tale of how far we’ll go to win back the ones we love. From the creators of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, here’s another comical look at modern relationships.

Fefu and Her Friends
October 20 – 25, 2009 @ 8 pm; October 24 & 25 @ 2 pm | $12/$10
By Maria Irene Fornes
Directed by Des Price
Fefu and Her Friends is one of Maria Irene Fornes’s most performed and critically acclaimed plays. It won the Obie award for playwriting in 1977 and the LA Weekly called the play: “One of the most powerful plays written about the mysteries and shared hallucinations of the female experience.” The play takes place at an elegant New England country house where the characters of the title have assembled. As the women meet, their entwined personal histories and mercurial moods move the audience through the piece. It is at times both witty and disturbing. Stirrings of insanity, violence, heterosexual frustration and repressed lesbian desire contribute to the play’s unsettling atmosphere. Overall, it is a stunning achievement in playwriting from the woman Tony Kushner has called “one of the greats.”

Directed by Dawn Moore
Exit 22’s fiercely youthful take on this timeless love story addresses head on the challenges inherent in presenting the classics to a modern audience. A student acting company begins rehearsal for Shakespeare’s secondmost performed play and reactions run the gamut from excitement to antipathy, spanning confusion, engagement and downright boredom: “What does this have to do with us?” “I’m not wearing tights!” Referencing periods and styles from Elizabethan up to West Side Story, including Baz Luhrman’s movie version, this production is sure to provoke discussion as youth and adult alike grapple with bigotry, loyalty, lust and the law in trying to answer “How far will I go for love?”
