Judy McFarlane: a writer’s act of courage

Despite the fact that she’d always wanted to write, Judy McFarlane was so daunted by the prospect as a young Arts undergrad at UBC that she couldn’t even bring herself to enter the Creative Writing department.
“I stood outside of the building, and I just couldn’t make myself open the door,” she says. Instead, Judy went on to become a corporate commercial lawyer and raise three children. Somehow, though, the dream of becoming a writer just never went away. “Basically, I woke up one morning and thought, ‘If you’re lucky, you’ve got 30 years.
