      Turn On, Log In and Get Connected—An Introduction to Computers

      It’s time to face it – computers are here to stay. In this workshop you will be introduced to their world and all its wonders. Our patient and talented instructors will start right from the beginning explaining hardware and software, types of computers, versions of Windows and how to log on and off. From there the mouse and desktop will be covered including arranging icons, the recycle bin and how to get on to the Internet. Use of the keyboard will also be handled and tips for display and customized screen savers. After this course we recommend you move on to our Word 2010: The Basics course (see below).

      Word 2010: The Basics

      For complete beginners to Microsoft Word, you will be amazed by what you can do when you finish these three sessions. You will learn to prepare documents, enter, delete, insert text and then save your document and find it again. Printing, spell check, and copy, cut and paste will be covered. You will also learn page setups, and how to insert pictures. These basic techniques will take you a long way in your understanding of computers, the Word program and what you can accomplish with it.

      Fun with Word

      That’s right – fun with Word. This class is really fun as you learn how to create invitations, address labels, gift tags, vacation checklists, itineraries and even an accident report form to keep safely stowed in your glove box. And there’s more, you will learn how to produce a one-page newsletter (great for all those committees and clubs you are involved in) and a wonderful customized calendar with all your favorite photos.

      Working with Files and Folders

      It’s time to get really organized. In this workshop you will learn how to organize your files into a meaningful set of folders that you create. You will learn how to create and locate files, rename them and handle file extensions. You will be able to move or delete a file or folder, create shortcuts and to back up files to a USB drive.

      Set up your own free web-based email account and learn the basics of sending and receiving emails including sending attachments (files and photos), managing your mail, setting up contacts and sending group emails.

      Internet Search Tutorial

      In this course you will learn how to enhance your Internet searches so that the number of returns is smaller and the information more relevant. Explore various search engines and subject guides to see how they differ and how searches can be limited to only government or educational sites. Examine some of the security issues associated with Internet searches. The techniques learned in class can also be applied to library searches. A CD with additional information and exercises may be purchased from the instructor for $1.

      Blogging with WordPress

      Over the past few years, blogging (the publishing of publicly accessible web-based personal journals) has virtually transformed journalism and micro-publishing by providing a simple, free (or low-cost) means by which everyone with Internet access can reach a world-wide audience with their own opinions, ideas and expertise. In this class, you will use WordPress to create, customize and maintain a personal blog site. The course covers account creation, password management, creating a blog home page, creating and managing posts, and adding additional pages. Also included are techniques for incorporating links, widgets, images, picture galleries and videos into you blog. This is an intro-level course and is not intended for those who already have extensive WordPress experience.

      Please bring a USB drive to class.

      Prerequisites: Internet access as well as the successful completion of the Working with Files and Folders course (see above) or equivalent Mac or PC familiarity. If you are unsure about any of these prerequisites please contact the instructor before registering.

      Introduction to Digital Photography

      In this course we’ll explore all the features packed into today’s digital cameras. Learn to take photos of people, places, or things under various lighting conditions using the effects and options you have on-board. Once captured, share your images with family and friends using readily available online tools. Learn to manage your files, save, e-mail, catalogue and share. We’ll have access to a computer lab for viewing and editing your shots.
