Introduction to Filmmaking - NEW

Ages 13 – 16
Are you a budding filmmaker? Interested in learning how movies are created? Curious about working in the film industry one day? Then you’ll enjoy this two week intensive course covering the whole filmmaking process, from writing and pre-production all the way to editing and delivery. But you will not only learn, you'll be doing it too!
You will have the opportunity to create two short films and try out several different disciplines on set while being supervised and educated by industry professionals. You will be shooting in High Definition digital video and be using industry standard lighting, cameras, and editing equipment. At the end of camp, you will receive a DVD of your completed work.

Narrative in Cyberspace - NEW

Ages 13 – 16
Social and interactive media has become a part of popular culture and your world. During this week we look at how to use social media and the online space to bring stories to life safely and responsibly. They could be stories around music or artwork, around building a business, or more traditional stories involving characters and settings from the imagination. Learn how to best utilize storytelling tools like blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, blip.fm, Flickr, etc. to bring your stories to life in the online space. By the end of the week, you will have the beginnings of a blog, integrated with your other social media tools to tell stories, and will have explored safe and responsible online practices.

Ages 13+

Computer Game Programming With Game Maker – Intermediate Level

Ages 13 – 16
If you’ve been using Game Maker to create your own computer games, or if you have completed an intro Game Programming course and want more, this exciting and fun course will help you make the jump to a higher skill level. Topics included: designing better user interfaces, exciting game play, using advanced actions, understanding and implementing particles, creating great platform and scrolling games, using the Game Maker programming language (GML), intro to 3-D game creation, and creating new actions with the Game Maker extension library.

Prerequisite: This course is NOT for beginners. You must have already created at least two of your own games (on your own or in class) using Game Maker (or another drag and drop game construction language). Whether you dream of being editor of your school newspaper or a reporter for a major news outlet, this action-packed camp teaches you the basics and leaves you with a few articles for your resume. From researching background information, interviewing sources and taking photos, to writing, revising and editing, you’ll learn—and practise—newspaper writing from story idea to story completion. Then you’ll see how it all comes together during a visit to a local newspaper office.

Do you pour over decorating magazines to see the latest trends in colour, fabric and furniture? Then you need to take this camp! Take a journey into the world of professional interior decorating and discover the amazing career choices in this diverse industry. Important decorating principles are discussed, including form and function, colour, accessorizing, furniture selection and placement, lighting, traffic patterns, floor plans and more. Bring a photo of a room that needs help and by the end of the course you will have created a plan to make it fantastic, all under the guidance of a professional interior decorator. You will take home actual paint colours, possible fabric choices and investigate furniture of different styles to suit your personality.

Bonus: A tour of a home décor rental company is included and you will have the hands-on experience of putting your decorating principles into action!

Anime: Level 1

Now you can get hands-on experience in this popular animation style! Through demonstrations and workshops, you will see how popular anime characters are created. You also learn fundamental drawing skills and proven techniques to bring your own anime characters to life using expressions and poses. In addition, you will gain a stronger understanding of body and head construction, key components in the art of anime. It doesn't matter if you're just starting out, or have already had some artistic training – this course will take your creativity to the next level! You should bring to every class: 10 sheets of white copy paper (preferably in a binder or duotang), two pencils with eraser ends, a pencil sharpener, a black marker (i.e. Sharpies or Crayola) and colouring materials (optional) such as crayons, pencil crayons or markers.

This hands-on camp lets beginners learn photography in a creative and energetic atmosphere. Learn the fundamentals of lighting and of shooting portraits in a studio set-up as well as in the outdoors. Create expressive photographic images through landscape and nature, and experiment with special effects to get just the right look. Ad campaign photography, fashion and product photography will also be covered here. Please bring a digital camera to class.

Clothes Minded: An Introduction to Textiles

Ages 13 and up
Ever wondered how the cool designs on your favourite t-shirts are created? Come and explore some exciting ways of transforming fabrics with images that you have designed. You'll be introduced to various transfer techniques to allow you to reproduce images onto cloth, including simple silkscreen methods, as well as stamping and mono-printing with textile paints and dyes. We will further enhance the fabric with some surface embellishment such as foiling, puff medium and photo image transfers.

Pattern Drafting for Teens

Ages 14 and up
Produce a custom made fashion garment while learning the basics of dress pattern design and construction. Practice taking accurate measurements, drafting and adjusting paper patterns, and constructing a perfect-for-you fashion skirt in the fabric and design of your choice. In this professional workshop you learn on tools and machinery used in the fashion industry.

Note: This short camp satisfies the sewing requirement for application to the Costuming for Theatre and Film Program at Capilano University.
