(NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C.)—One of the greatest living directors of documentary cinema will be showing a retrospective of his renowned works at the Capilano Performing Arts Theatre Saturday on Saturday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m.

An evening with Albert Maysles will include a retrospective of his influential productions, including a sneak preview of some works-in-progress. This outstanding event will be moderated by film writer, Katherine Monk.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students in Capilano University’s Documentary program and for the community at large to meet a living legend,” said Michelle Mason, coordinator of the University’s Documentary program. “It’s going to be a very special night as we host Albert Maysles’ first visit to Vancouver in more than 30 years.”

Maysles and his brother, David, revolutionized the documentary form, directing such classics as Gimme Shelter, Grey Gardens, and Salesman – all seminal films that beat a path for the next generation of filmmakers to follow. Working from a “handheld and an open heart” philosophy, Maysles, at the age of 87, is still actively making films.

The visionary filmmaker is a world-renowned pioneer of the direct cinema movement that was born in the 1960s – an observational directing style that uses handheld camerawork to reveal truth through the details and actions of its characters.

The event is presented by the Capilano University Documentary program in partnership with the National Film Board of Canada and BC Film. General admission tickets are $10/$5 for students. The Capilano Performing Arts Theatre is located at the North Vancouver campus at 2055 Purcell Way. To purchase tickets visit www.capilanou.ca/news-events/performing-arts/ticket
