December 17, 2008: Capilano University unveils its new logo

      (NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C.)—Growth, success, location and history are a few of the key elements of Capilano University’s new logo, approved by the institution's board of governors on Tuesday, December 16.

      The logo was one of three that were developed over an extensive design and consultation process by the University’s Marketing and Communications department. In-house graphic designers, Jana Hotkova and Randy Snyder, developed the concepts and are both graduates of Capilano’s graphic design and illustration program (now IDEA program).

      “We delivered presentations to more than 20 community groups, including employees and students,” said David DeMuynck, manager of the University’s Marketing and Communications department. “Participants were shown all three designs simultaneously and asked for first impressions and feedback; the designers then provided the rationale for each design, and participants were asked to comment further.”

      While each creation reflected various characteristics and traits of Capilano, the selected logo was by far the favourite. This design most closely resembles the existing Capilano College logo, and represents an evolution of CC to CU. Hotkova describes the design in terms of movement and growth: “The strength of the “C” embraces the “U,” and the “U” shape grows out and beyond, like students who come here and are helped by faculty and staff to grow and become successful in life.”

      The design also reflects several of the significant traits people in initial discovery sessions felt were descriptive of the institution. These included: welcoming, caring, nurturing, accessible, and approachable.

      The new logo’s West Coast feel is considered appropriate for a university that is promoted and recognized at both local and international levels. The underlying First Nations influence links the University logo to the institution’s 40-year history as a College, as well as to its namesake, Chief Joe Capilano. The name Capilano was selected in 1968 by North Shore residents to honour Chief Joe Capilano (Sá7pelek), who was born in 1850. Among his people, Chief Capilano was a respected leader and Chief of the Skwxwú7mesh/Squamish Nation. Skwxwú7mesh is a reference to ‘people of the sacred water,’ as the Squamish River was well known for its curative qualities. Capilano University’s North Vancouver and Squamish campuses sit on Skwxwú7mesh territory, which encompasses parts of the Lower Mainland and Sea to Sky Corridor.

      Comments from people about the institution’s new logo include:

      · “would be recognizable without the words”

      · “has an organic feel that captures a sense of nature without being literal”

      The new logo will be made available for use once the design standards are finalized and approved. It is estimated that this should occur by the end of January 2009. In the meantime, the current Capilano University wordmark should be used.

      Capilano University serves the communities of the Lower Mainland, Howe Sound, and the Sunshine Coast through campuses in North Vancouver, Squamish and Sechelt. Enrolment totals 6,700 students in credit programs each term with an additional 7,000 people taking non-credit courses annually. Capilano offers a complete range of preparatory courses, university transfer courses, business and management studies, creative and applied arts programs, health and human services programs, plus a range of services in support of student learning and success.
