(SQUAMISH, B.C.)—Starting this fall, the Squamish campus of Capilano College will offer an exciting new 16-month Destination Resort Management diploma program that will provide students with an in-depth understanding of how to operate within a destination resort.

“Resort management is one of the largest growing sectors in British Columbia’s tourism industry,” says Jonathan Rouse, chair of the College’s Tourism department. “In the next several years, the tourism industry will require approximately 84,000 new skilled employees. This program will contribute to providing a skilled workforce capable of meeting this incredible growth area in resort development.”

With approximately 700 resorts in the province, students completing the program will have ample opportunities to achieve a career in this desirable field.

“A graduate would be able to work in many areas within a resort,” says Stephanie Wells, education programmer at the College’s Squamish campus. “They will learn, among other things, how hotels manage both their front and back end operations, human resources management, how to develop marketing plans, and an understanding of cross cultural tourism.”

Whether a student is coming directly from high school or is already working in the industry and is looking to advance their career, the Destination Resort Management program will provide them with the opportunity of entering a field that has enormous employment potential. Program graduates will also have the option of laddering into the College’s popular Tourism degree program, offered at its North Vancouver campus.

The Destination Resort Management diploma program begins in September 2005 and includes classroom training, field school and a co-op work placement. Only 34 students will be accepted. An information meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 105 at the Squamish campus. For more information, please call 604.892.5322, or e-mail drmco-op@capilanou.ca.
