(NORTH VANCOUVER)--The Women’s Studies department at Capilano College presents poet, novelist and essayist, Dionne Brand, on Thursday, October 12 at 7: 30 p.m. in the Cedar building, room 148.
As part of the Women’s lecture series, Brand will give selected readings and a discussion of her work at this free event. Her seven volumes of poetry include Land to Light On, which won the Governor General’s Award for Poetry and the Trillium Award for Literature in 1997.
Brand’s fiction includes the acclaimed novel In Another Place Not Here – a 1998 New York Times notable book – and Sans Souci and Other Stories. Her most recent title, At the Full and Change of the Moon, is a novel spanning six generations, two wars and the violence of the late 20th century. The Village Voice included her in its 1999 Writers on the Verge literary supplement. It was a Los Angeles Times notable book of the year in 1999.
Her works of non-fiction include No Burden to Carry: Narratives of Black Working Women in Ontario, 1920s to 1950s, a collection of oral histories; and, Bread Out of Stone, a book of essays for which Adrienne Rich called her "a cultural critic of uncompromising courage, an artist in language and ideas, and intellectual conscience for her country."
