May 1, 2013

Learning of news of the award while studying in Japan, Naoki has provided us with a video response. The Francis and Anne Farnan Memorial Award is awarded every spring to English as a Second Language (ESL) students enrolled at Capilano University. The award was established by former Capilano University faculty member F. John Farnan and wife Vilailuxa to honour the memory of parents Francis and Anne Farnan who, with their children, immigrated to Canada from England in 1948. The Francis and Anne Farnan Memorial Award recognizes deserving domestic (Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, protected and refugee status) and International students who enrol in the ESL program at Capilano University. This award specifically recognizes students' career goals in the fields of education, medicine, internationalism, social science, animal welfare and the arts. As well as high academic achievement, the candidates' spirit of volunteerism within the community is also to be acknowledged among the criteria for award selection. The candidate is selected in November and the award is given in the spring term.
