A day doesn’t go by where I am not thinking about Austria and the experiences I had studying abroad. I have never felt such a strong connection to a place and time in my life. I remember the day when I found out I was going to study abroad in Innsbruck and I am just as excited now about the experiences I had as I was when I first realized I was going to study abroad. It was an experience filled with laughter, emotion, challenges, and new wisdom. Every time I hear bells chime I’m taken back to the hills of Austria where the cows, sheep, and goats roam freely in the mountains. This feeling of nostalgia reminds me of what a magical place Innsbruck is and how grateful I am to have had the experience to study abroad there.
There is a reason why all returning study abroad students say YOU HAVE TO DO IT. Time studying abroad changes your life. You meet friends you never would have and you do things you never would have found yourself doing before. You become aware of international issues and are shown new pathways in life. Studying abroad truly has the potential to take your life further. It is worth the financial stress or any potential homesick feelings you think you may have.
I met some pretty incredible people and did some pretty incredible things. I never would have imagined myself biking hundreds of kilometers in Italy by myself, sleeping on a beach in Greece, getting stuck in a small village in Austria, or touring with one of Germany’s most celebrated bands. These are things that simply don’t happen when you don’t go on study abroad.
I highly recommend you seize this opportunity. It is worth ever penny you spend – and more! Studying abroad turns shy into confidant, scared into fearless, and hesitant into certain. If I could do it again I would. It truly is a once in a lifetime experience.
