The ECCE Diploma provides students with the competencies and knowledge required to work with children under the age of five in licensed preschools and childcare centres. Education courses in the diploma meet the requirements of the Early Childhood Educator Registry for the ECE Certificate to Practice; Infant/Toddler Certificate to Practice and/or the Special Needs Certificate to Practice. Students who successfully complete an ECCE diploma are eligible to apply to the degree program.

Three core threads represent the focus of the education courses offered in the degree: Curriculum, Childhoods and Leadership and Advocacy. Each of these threads is woven throughout the degree, inviting students to engage in critically-reflective practice, working to create classrooms of social justice and equity for children and families.

As a faculty we are inspired in our own teaching by Reggio Emilia pedagogue Carlina Rinaldi who calls for a ‘powerful educator- ’ who is able to work with powerful children. -This ‘powerful’ educator, Rinaldi (2006) explains, is “open to the unexpected, one who engages in learning with the child as a researcher in order to be open to possibilities in the project of education”. (p. 125).

Students can be enrolled either full-time or part-time. Classes are offered in a variety of modes, including face to face, mixed mode, on-line and as summer intensives.

Students in the diploma program are eligible to apply to the ECE Registry (Ministry of Children and Family Development) for the following credentials:

    ECCE Basic Certificate
    Infant Toddler Certificate
    Special Needs Certificate
