China Field School

    • Come experience 4000 years of civilization in 2 weeks with the China Field School.  Explore China through historical sites such as the Forbidden City and Great Wall in Beijing, the Ti’an Buddha in Hong Kong and the legendary five rams in Guangzhou.  Guest lectures, factory visits and access to the largest import/export trade show in the world, the Canton Fair will give you insight into China’s growing economy. 

      The field school will go to 4 cities - Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing. 

      The China Field Schools are led by School of Business instructor Andrea Eby and School of Tourism management instructor Henry Chow. Andrea Eby is a marketing industry professional with International experience and contacts in China. Andrea is Slovak born and has lived in six countries. Henry was born in Beijing, grew up in Hong Kong, and studied in Canada. Henry has extensive airline, business, and tourism background with a passion to travel, more than 15 countries and counting. Andrea and Henry are all about the student experience and are dedicated to deliver value and a memorable experience through both business and cultural opportunities.​

    • Itinerary

      Participants will attend 4-5 mandatory pre departure courses prior to departure from March 15 – April 23, 2018.  These course times and dates will be determined once the final group is confirmed.  Overseas travel will take place from April 22 – May 6, 2018. 

      Field School destinations will include: Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.

      Activities will include:

      • Visits to Ti’an Tan Buddha, Victoria Peak and Hong Kong Museum of History
      • Factory tours of High Tech and Low Tech manufacturing companies in Guangzhou
      • Guided tour of the Yuexiu Park, Five Ram Statues,Sun-Yat Sen Gardens,  Memorial Hall, ZhongxinPlaza
      • Visits to the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, HoHai and Great Wall of China in Beijing
      • English corners with students from Jinan University
      • Visit to the Canadian Embassy in Beijing
      • Architectural tour of Shanghai
      • Visit to Shanghai Technology Park

      The itinerary is subject to change. The final itinerary will be confirmed in April.

      Academic Course

      This field school will cover key areas involved in creating business in China.  Canadian and other international companies need to know how to break into the world’s second largest and fastest growing economy.  Students will gain insight into how to do that by meeting International and Chinese companies and organizations involved in market development and in financing business in China.  As the leading business and finance center in China, Guangzhou will be the focus of our investigation.

      Guest lectures in China will supplement in-the-field experience and meetings with companies engaged in business in China.  Lecturers will discuss marketing in China, managing marketing channels, managing relations with Chinese manufacturers and importers, logistics and related areas.  In addition, you will meet business students in China from Jinan University and Lingnan University in Hong Kong.

      Program Conditions


      We will be staying in comfortable, but budget hotels, hostels and Hutong accommodations. You will be required to share rooms with other students. 


      Some meals are included.  There will be some hosted events where breakfast, lunch or dinner will be partially covered.  There will be occasions where you are expected to cover your own meals. Please plan accordingly.


      We will be travelling and visiting a diverse range of different visitor attractions, destinations and other natural settings. Students are expected to participate in all activities as part of their educational experience.

      Travel Dates

      We will be departing on Sunday April 22nd. A mandatory Pre Departure Sessions will be held during exam period. 

      The Program Fee is approximately $3,000.00.  This includes:

      • return international airfare and internal flights
      • double occupancy accommodations
      • in-country travel 
      • airport transfers in China 
      • industry and cultural visits
      • program field trips and excursions
      • some meals

      The program cost does NOT include tuition for a 6 credit upper level course, passport fees, meals other than those specified in the itinerary, travel to and from Vancouver Airport, transportation expenses other than those indicated on the itinerary, or other personal expenses.  Students should budget approximately $20/day for meals, buses, and taxis.

      Payment and Refund Policy

      All field school payments, except the deposit can be made by credit card, personal cheque, or cash. Personal cheques and cash will only be accepted for the deposit. Cheques can be made payable to "Capilano University". Please indicate your student number on the memo line.

      How to Apply

      Step 1: Apply

      Complete the online Field School Application Form. There is no application fee. We require a minimum number of applications to proceed with the Field School. The application deadline is October 20, 2017.

      Note: If you are applying from another institution, you must first apply to Capilano University as a Visiting Student. Please see How to Apply to Field Schools for Non-CapU Students

      Step 2: Interview

      All applicants will be interviewed by the Field School leaders prior to acceptance. Interviews will be held October 22-Nov 8, 2017. Interviews will be scheduled using Doodle and instructions will be sent to applicants on receipt of their completed online application. 

      Step 3: Register

      All successful candidates will be notified via email. Selected students will be permitted to register in the Field School course during the 2018 Spring online course registration period that runs November 14-23, 2017. Detailed course registration instructions will be provided to accepted students via email.

      Step 4: Pay Deposit

      Registered students will be required to confirm their commitment to the Field School program by paying a $350 non-refundable Field School program deposit by November 23, 2017. Deposit payments can be made directly to the Capilano University cashier's office or online through the Student Information Web Service. 

      Awards and Funding
