(SECHELT, B.C.)—For anyone passionate about mountain biking, Capilano College’s Sunshine Coast campus in Sechelt is the place to be this September. Offering the only program of its kind on the planet, the college will bring participants of the new Mountain Bike Operations certificate program the knowledge and skills to find employment doing something they love.

The two-term program runs from September to April and the two park/trail design and building courses will be taught by Lora Woolner and Mark Schmidt. Both are well-known in Canada’s mountain biking industry for their trail building and development courses, which they lead for the International Mountain Bike Association.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for people to take this program in British Columbia, considered by many to be one of the best mountain biking destinations in the world,” says Jean Bennett, dean of the Sunshine Coast campus. “And, we’ve attracted two of Canada’s best trail design experts as instructors. For mountain biking enthusiasts, this program will be an amazing experience.”

Twenty-four students will learn about the tourism industry, risk management and event management, as well as sustainable trail and park design and building. Courses from the program can be used to transfer into several other tourism programs offered at the College, such as the two-year Tourism Management Co-op diploma program, which then ladders into the four-year Tourism Management degree program.

Employment opportunities for graduates exist within the expanding tourism industry and placements could be found at various resorts, municipal and provincial government organizations (park and trail builder, consultant, risk management, recreation planner), and with non-profit clubs and sport organizations.

The program takes place on British Columbia’s beautiful Sunshine Coast, a scenic coastal community known for its mountain bike trails and only 40 minutes from West Vancouver.
