      (SECHELT, B.C.)—With the bed and breakfast industry booming on the Sunshine Coast, many community members are exploring ways to become involved in this lucrative business venture.

      A partnership formed between the Sunshine Coast campus of Capilano College and the Sunshine Coast Bed & Breakfast and Cottage Association has resulted in an excellent learning opportunity for those new to the industry, or giving it careful consideration.

      “There are more than 140 members in the Association,” says Chris McNaughton, the Association’s president. “Bed & Breakfast is a growing industry sector on the coast and new members require a range of skill sets to help them to be successful in their business.”

      Two short evening courses offered at Capilano College will cover the financial operation of a B & B and how the Web can be maximized as a marketing tool. Financial management for business began October 28 and Optimizing Web marketing for your B & B begins on November 26. Both will run from 6 to 9 p.m. over three consecutive Tuesdays.

      “We customized these courses with bed and breakfast owners in mind,” says campus manager, Jean Bennett, “and the curriculum was developed with Diaya Maseja and Judy Spears, representatives of the Sunshine Coast Bed & Breakfast Association.”

      Bennett adds that this type of partnership is a good example of how the College can work with members of its communities to develop and deliver effective industry specific training requirements.

      “From these two course offerings, we’ll learn more about the additional needs that B & B owners have, and we’ll continue to develop and deliver other courses to help them enhance their businesses.”

      The Sunshine Coast campus of Capilano College was established in 1977 to serve the communities of the region. The present facility was opened in 1987 and expanded in 2001 with a new library, computer lab, and an overall upgrade. It offers area residents a variety of programs including: adult basic education; career/vocational courses; personal management and planning; literacy and learning; Eldercollege; plus a selection of university transfer courses. Popular career programs include residential care (every three years), business administration, and early childhood care and education.
